Historical Figures
- Ernesto Miranda... the plaintiff in Miranda v. Arizona,
the Supreme Court case from which we get the Miranda Rights. I have an
entire page devoted to Ernesto Miranda, Miranda v. Arizona, and the Miranda Rights.
- Francisco de Miranda... a Venezuelan revolutionary.
encyclopedia.com says:
1750-1816, a Venezuelan revolutionary. A Spanish army officer, he fought in
both the American Revolution and the French revolutionary wars, was in the
service of Catherine the Great, then joined (1810) the revolution against
spanish rule in Venezuela. He commanded rebel forces and served briefly as
dictator, but military reserves forced his surrender (1812) and imprisonment.
He is known as the Precursor, to distinguish him from Simon Bolivar, who
completed the task of liberation. (thanks, Miranda Beverly). Here's a portrait and biography (in spanish) and another biography in English.
- Giovanni Pico Della Mirandola... ("Pico") an Italian philosopher and scholar during the Renaissance, who wrote Oration on the Dignity of Man. Here's a chapter by Walter Pater about Pico, Italian scholars and the Renaissance.
